The Aikido Club is one of the oldest and longest running clubs in Maynooth and has been in existence since at least 1982. It has run continuously since then. Aikido is a Japanese martial art. The idea is to avoid an attack, blend with your attacker and establish control. Aikido is suitable for people of all shapes and sizes. At the beginning no level of fitness is required. Benefits include self-discipline, increased fitness, better posture, balance and breathing, and a physical competence and confidence in movement. Aikido is a non-competitive martial art and we practice by working together rather than trying to defeat each other. A typical class starts with some simple exercises followed by posture and movement work. We then usually move on to ukemi (how to fall) and some Aikido techniques. In the first few classes the emphasis will be more on the movement and ukemi than on the techniques. (Don't worry we always teach you how to fall before we throw you!) We welcome beginners at all times. The Maynooth Aikido club is quite small and most of the people are beginners. If you want to try something new come along on any Tuesday at 7pm or Thursday at 6pm. Wear loose clothing - tracksuit is ideal (we do a lot of kneeling down so shorts are a bit hard on the knees). We are affiliated to the Irish Aikido Federation and through them to the International Aikido Federation and the Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Japan. Our current instructors are Detta Dickinson (4th dan) and Lars Pforte (2nd dan).

Judo is a sport of unarmed combat intended to train the body and the mind. It is a modern martial art, which literally translates into "the gentle way". The main objective is to either throw or take-down an opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue and opponent with a pin, or force an opponent to submit (tap) with a joint lock or a choke. Strikes (punches, kicks, etc) are not allowed. We aim to offer a safe environment for all members to learn these skills under qualified instructors. Everyone and anyone is welcome to join!
We teach the art of American Kenpo Karate. A highly effective martial arts system which includes sparring, self-defense and forms. It doesn't matter how big or small you are, Kenpo is a tailored system. That means you will alter techniques to your height, weight and reach. For us it's all about having a great time! We want you to leave feeling much better after the class then when you came in. Kenpo is about building physical and psychological strength and resillence. We will have an intense 15 minute warm-up at the beginning of every class to ensure your body is ready for learning and growth. Then we dive deep into techniques, sparring and drills. We will explore and experience the system from all different angles to ensure depth of knowledge. "To hear is to doubt, to see is to be deceived, but to feel is to believe!" - Ed Parker

Racquetball is a fast paced sport played with standardised equipment with specific court dimensions worldwide. The sport which was invented by Joe Sobeck in the United States became popular during the late 1970's and early 1980's because it was fun, easy to learn how to play and it is one of the best workouts you can get in a short period of time. Racquetball can be played either on an indoor or outdoor court with anywhere from 2 to 4 players at a time. There are various governing bodies for the sport that provide on-going leadership worldwide. The Court Indoor racquetball is played on a 20' X 20' X 40' court that has four walls, a ceiling and a floor, all of which are used during play. Players will say the fact that you can "play the ball" off of any wall anytime during the rally is what makes racquetball so fun right from the start. Lines marked on the floor of the court define the service and receive areas and have been given names called the "Service Line," the "Short Line" and the "Receiving Line." The walls are also given names called the "Front Wall," the "Side Wall," and the "Back Wall." Rules apply about these areas, lines and walls and where players may position themselves during actual play. Equipment and Apparel The ball used to play the game is air filled, about three inches in diameter, and has a lively bounce. The racquet used is a fixed frame with strings and has a grip at the end for players to hold securely during play. Safety glasses (eye-wear protection) are worn to prevent eye injury. Indoor runners, socks, shorts, T-Shirts, wrist bands and head bands are generally worn during play. Getting Started Join our club to hellp in getting you started. There is a 40x20x20 court on south campus. We will provide equipment initially until you can afford the investment in the sport. Currently our most popular sessions are 5pm to 7pm on Tuesday and Thursday. We play on the indoor courts on south campus (we meet just outside the conference and accommodation offices next to Callan hall). Please email us if you need any extra information or if you wish to organize a game at a different time.

Hi Folks, If you love meeting new people and don't mind getting into the freezing Atlantic Irish sea, MU Surf Club is for you! Club activities mainly consist of going on trips usually during breaktimes/holidays around the Irish coastal villages and spending a couple of days either learning the beautiful sport of surfing for beginners or perfecting your surf technique for experienced surfers. When we're not surfing we enjoy what each coastal village has to offer, be it tourist attractions, fine cuisine and obviously at night we don't miss out on the music scene by either revelling in the local pub scene or hitting the nightclubs. We don't meet up every week, so if you're a busy person and can't commit to meetings every week that's no problem, however we occasionally organise events for club members throughout the year. So if you've never surfed and would love to have a go at it while meeting tonnes of new people or you already have a passion for it and just want to improve while meeting felllow surf lovers then MU Surf Club would love to have you on board!
We are a club based on the Korean martial art Taekwondo. Our main goal as a club is to promote fitness, well-being and fun through Taekwondo training. There are elements of fitness training, self defence and of course sparring! Our training complements other martial arts for strength, conditioning and flexibility while our fighting is identical to that of light contact kickboxing. Two years ago, our club hosted Maynooth's very first Taekwondo Fight Night which was a huge success. We also competed at the Irish Taekwondo Intervarsities and took home gold, silver and bronze medals. This year we hope to do the same. Our classes cater for beginners all the way up to black belts! So whether you are looking for something fun to do, make good friends, get fit, or you have years of experience in a martial art (ITF or WTF) and are looking to continue it in University, the Taekwondo club is perfect for you!

Ultimate Frisbee is the competitive, fast-paced and fast-growing sport that nobody’s talking about. It’s also the most chilled-out, fun, and friendly hobby ever aired on a global stage. Ultimate caters for everyone and is as intense as you want it to be, but immense fun is to be had at every level, and as Club of the Year 2014 and 2018, that’s a promise we can keep. In recent years Maynooth players have travelled to Italy, England, Canada, Amsterdam, Germany, France, Belgium and to every corner of Ireland, and this year we want to bring you with us. Even if you’ve never touched a Frisbee before, come to a training session (or one of our infamous parties) and we guarantee you’ll be addicted.
